On My Wishlist {9}

On My Wishlist is a fun weekly event hosted by Book Chick City and runs every Saturday. It's where I list all the books I desperately want but haven't actually bought yet. They can be old, new or forthcoming.

I haven't read the Perfect Chemistry series yet and I have heard so many great stuff about these books.  I sure wish I get my hands on them soon!

Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles

When Brittany Ellis walks into chemistry class on the first day of senior year, she has no clue that her carefully created “perfect” life is about to unravel before her eyes. She’s forced to be lab partners with Alex Fuentes, a gang member from the other side of town, and he is about to threaten everything she's worked so hard for—her flawless reputation, her relationship with her boyfriend, and the secret that her home life is anything but perfect.

Alex is a bad boy and he knows it. So when he makes a bet with his friends to lure Brittany into his life, he thinks nothing of it. But soon Alex realizes Brittany is a real person with real problems, and suddenly the bet he made in arrogance turns into something much more.

In a passionate story about looking beneath the surface, Simone Elkeles breaks through the stereotypes and barriers that threaten to keep Brittany and Alex apart.
Rules of Attraction by Simone Elkeles

When Carlos Fuentes returns to America after living in Mexico for a year, he doesn’t want any part of the life his older brother, Alex, has laid out for him at a high school in Colorado . Carlos likes living his life on the edge and wants to carve his own path—just like Alex did. Then he meets Kiara Westford. She doesn’t talk much and is completely intimidated by Carlos’ wild ways. As they get to know one another, Carlos assumes Kiara thinks she’s too good for him, and refuses to admit that she might be getting to him. But he soon realizes that being himself is exactly what Kiara needs right now.
Chain Reaction by Simone Elkeles

Luis Fuentes is a good boy who doesn't live with the angst that his big brothers, Alex and Carlos, have always lived with. Luis is smart, funny, and has big dreams of becoming an astronaut. But when he falls for the wrong girl, Luis enters a dark world he's never known, and just when he thinks he's got life all figured out, learns some disturbing news about his family that destroys his positive outlook on life. Will that Fuentes bad boy streak come out with a vengeance and lure Luis to live on the edge like his new girlfriend and his own father?
Continuing all the steamy romance of the first two books, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Simone Elkeles gives fans one more satisfying taste of the irresistible Fuentes boys.

Waiting on Wednesday {14}

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases you are eagerly anticipating.

Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare will be released on December 6th 2011.  This is the second book in the Infernal Devices series.  I know that I still got like six months worth of waiting, but I just can't get my thoughts off this book!  I simply love all the novels by Cassandra Clare and I cannot wait much longer for this one.

    In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has at last found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when rogue forces in the Clave plot to see her protector, Charlotte, replaced as head of the Institute. If Charlotte loses her position, Tessa will be out on the street—and easy prey for the mysterious Magister, who wants to use Tessa’s powers for his own dark ends.

    With the help of the handsome, self-destructive Will and the fiercely devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister’s war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal. He blames them for a long-ago tragedy that shattered his life. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors, from the slums of London to an enchanted ballroom where Tessa discovers that the truth of her parentage is more sinister than she had imagined. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister himself knows their every move—and that one of their own has betrayed them.

    Tessa finds her heart drawn more and more to Jem, but her longing for Will, despite his dark moods, continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will—the wall he has built around himself is crumbling. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa the answers about who she is and what she was born to do?

    As their dangerous search for the Magister and the truth leads the friends into peril, Tessa learns that when love and lies are mixed, they can corrupt even the purest heart.

    Cover Crazy Monday {13}

    Cover Crazy is a weekly meme that was created by Tawni over at The Book Worms to show which cover(s) you are absolutely going crazy over!

    This week I can't get my eyes off this book, The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer Smith which will be released on January 2nd 2012.

    What I love:

    I just love how cute this cover is!  The fonts used is so adorable and it fits just right with the title of the novel.  I also love looking at that heart which "encircles" the couple.  The position is just appropriate.  With the fonts used, you can't help but zoom into it... but with the heart it balances everything out AND make you want to look at that sweet couple.  I like how the other people seems to be faded out.  It gives me the chance to really focus on the couple.  Too bad this will come out next year.  With a cover like this, I want to start reading it ASAP!

    What about you?  Which book covers are you lusting over?

    In My Mailbox {13}

    In My Mailbox is an amazing weekly meme hosted by Kristi from The Story Siren that features the books we have received during the week.

    Here are the books I bought this week:

    The Summer of Firsts and Lasts by Tera Elan McVoy
    Three sisters. One life-changing summer.
    Calla loves summer because summer means Duncan. They’ve been best friends for years, but Calla has never worked up the nerve to tell him how she really feels. This summer, the summer before college, is Calla's last chance.
    Violet isn't much of a rule breaker in real life. But this isn't real life, this is summer, and Violet is determined to make the most of it. Besides, a little sneaking out never hurt anyone. And sneaking out with James is 100% worth the risk...even though James is completely off-limits.
    Daisy has never been the sister that boys notice, but when sparks fly with Joel at the first bonfire of summer, it seems so easy and right. So why is being his girlfriend so complicated?

    The Ghost and the Goth by Stacey Kade

    Alona Dare–Senior in high school, co-captain of the cheerleading squad, Homecoming Queen three years in a row, voted most likely to marry a movie star… and newly dead.

    I’m the girl you hated in high school. Is it my fault I was born with it all-good looks, silky blond hair, a hot bod, and a keen sense of what everyone else should not be wearing? But my life isn’t perfect, especially since I died. Run over by a bus of band geeks—is there anything more humiliating? As it turns out, yes—watching your boyfriend and friends move on with life, only days after your funeral. And you wouldn’t believe what they’re saying about me now that they think I can’t hear them. To top it off, I’m starting to disappear, flickering in and out of existence. I don’t know where I go when I’m gone, but it’s not good. Where is that freaking white light already?

    Will Killian–Senior in high school, outcast, dubbed “Will Kill” by the popular crowd for the unearthly aura around him, voted most likely to rob a bank…and a ghost-talker.

    I can see, hear, and touch the dead. Unfortunately, they can also see, hear and touch me. Yeah, because surviving high school isn’t hard enough already. I’ve done my best to hide my “gift.” After all, my dad, who shared my ability, killed himself because of it when I was fifteen. But lately, pretending to be normal has gotten a lot harder. A new ghost—an anonymous, seething cloud of negative energy with the capacity to throw me around—is pursuing me with a vengeance. My mom, who knows nothing about what I can do, is worrying about the increase in odd incidents, my shrink is tossing around terms like “temporary confinement for psychiatric evaluation,” and my principal, who thinks I’m a disruption and a faker, is searching for every way possible to get rid of me. How many weeks until graduation?

    Before I start with my review, let me say that this is the very first time that I read a book about ghosts, with ghosts, or whatnot.  Vampires, I can deal with.  Werewolves, I definitely am fascinated.  Aliens, I can say I am always an avid reader of those.  But, ghosts?  Hmmm... I have to think twice before I pick it up.

    The Ghost and the Goth is a fun, easy read.  Although at the start, its readers might think that the story is just so clinche - you know, popular, beautiful cheerleader meets the sullen outcast, as you move along the story it definitely is not as cliche as you once thought it would be.  The author was able to weave the characters of Alona and Will so perfectly, that it seems that they were based on actual persons.  Yes, there were shallow moments in the book, but well, I feel that those scenes were needed.  Alona is such an adorable character.  Yes, she might be shallow sometimes, really is the epitome of that perfect popular cheerleader, but as the story progresses, she also grows and she lets us see that her life, or rather, afterlife is not so perfect after all.  Will, the boy who sees, hears, and talks to ghost, definitely won me over.  He was such a cute misunderstood boy, but just as lovable.

    I love how the author wrote the scenes in this book.  The novel gives us two perspectives - Alona's and Will's.  We get to read their thoughts, their feelings, and see what they are seeing.  I also applaud the author for writing such an adorable book.  There are moments that I am literally laughing out loud while reading those quirky and funny comebacks between Alona and Will.

    Overall, this book is such a fun read with a great pacing and just the right amount of conflicts that will make you want to turn another page.  I cannot wait to read its sequel, Queen of the Dead.

    On My Wishlist {8}

    On My Wishlist is a fun weekly event hosted by Book Chick City and runs every Saturday. It's where I list all the books I desperately want but haven't actually bought yet. They can be old, new or forthcoming.

    This week I have three five books which I really want to get copies off, but unfortunately, are not yet available in our local bookstores... (so sad).

    Enclave by Ann Aguirre

    WELCOME TO THE APOCALYPSE

    In Deuce’s world, people earn the right to a name only if they survive their first fifteen years. By that point, each unnamed ‘brat’ has trained into one of three groups–Breeders, Builders, or Hunters, identifiable by the number of scars they bear on their arms. Deuce has wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember.

    As a Huntress, her purpose is clear—to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She’s worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing’s going to stop her, not even a beautiful, brooding Hunter named Fade. When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce’s troubles are just beginning.

    Down below, deviation from the rules is punished swiftly and harshly, and Fade doesn’t like following orders. At first she thinks he’s crazy, but as death stalks their sanctuary, and it becomes clear the elders don’t always know best, Deuce wonders if Fade might be telling the truth. Her partner confuses her; she’s never known a boy like him before, as prone to touching her gently as using his knives with feral grace.

    As Deuce’s perception shifts, so does the balance in the constant battle for survival. The mindless Freaks, once considered a threat only due to their sheer numbers, show signs of cunning and strategy… but the elders refuse to heed any warnings. Despite imminent disaster, the enclave puts their faith in strictures and sacrifice instead. No matter how she tries, Deuce cannot stem the dark tide that carries her far from the only world she’s ever known.
    Beauty Queens by Libba Bray

    From bestselling, Printz Award-winning author Libba Bray, the story of a plane of beauty pageant contestants that crashes on a desert island.
    Teen beauty queens. A "Lost"-like island. Mysteries and dangers. No access to email. And the spirit of fierce, feral competition that lives underground in girls, a savage brutality that can only be revealed by a journey into the heart of non-exfoliated darkness. Oh, the horror, the horror! Only funnier. With evening gowns. And a body count.
    Starcrossed by Josephone Angelini
    How do you defy destiny?
    Helen Hamilton has spent her entire sixteen years trying to hide how different she is—no easy task on an island as small and sheltered as Nantucket. And it's getting harder. Nightmares of a desperate desert journey have Helen waking parched, only to find her sheets damaged by dirt and dust. At school she's haunted by hallucinations of three women weeping tears of blood . . . and when Helen first crosses paths with Lucas Delos, she has no way of knowing they're destined to play the leading roles in a tragedy the Fates insist on repeating throughout history.
    As Helen unlocks the secrets of her ancestry, she realizes that some myths are more than just legend. But even demigod powers might not be enough to defy the forces that are both drawing her and Lucas together—and trying to tear them apart.

    The Girl In The Steel Corset
    In 1897 England, sixteen-year-old Finley Jayne has no one…except the "thing" inside her.
    When a young lord tries to take advantage of Finley, she fights back. And wins. But no normal Victorian girl has a darker side that makes her capable of knocking out a full-grown man with one punch….
    Only Griffin King sees the magical darkness inside her that says she's special, says she's one of them. The orphaned duke takes her in from the gaslit streets against the wishes of his band of misfits: Emily, who has her own special abilities and an unrequited love for Sam, who is part robot; and Jasper, an American cowboy with a shadowy secret.
    Griffin's investigating a criminal called The Machinist, the mastermind behind several recent crimes by automatons. Finley thinks she can help—and finally be a part of something, finally fit in.
    But The Machinist wants to tear Griff's little company of strays apart, and it isn't long before trust is tested on all sides. At least Finley knows whose side she's on—even if it seems no one believes her.
    The Summer of Firsts and Lasts by Terra Elan McVoy
    Three sisters. One life-changing summer.

    Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases you are eagerly anticipating.

    The Death Cure by James Dashner will be released on October 11th 2011.  This is the third book of the Maze Runner series.  I am very much excited to read the conclusion in this trilogy and get answers to my questions!

      Thomas knows that Wicked can't be trusted, but they say the time for lies is over, that they've collected all they can from the Trials and now must rely on the Gladers, with full memories restored, to help them with their ultimate mission. It's up to the Gladers to complete the blueprint for the cure to the Flare with a final voluntary test.

      What Wicked doesn't know is that something's happened that no Trial or Variable could have foreseen. Thomas has remembered far more than they think. And he knows that he can't believe a word of what Wicked says.

      The time for lies is over. But the truth is more dangerous than Thomas could ever imagine.
      Will anyone survive the Death Cure?

      Cover Crazy is a weekly meme that was created by Tawni over at The Book Worms to show which cover(s) you are absolutely going crazy over!

      This week I can't get my eyes off this book, Juliet Immortal by Stacey Jay which will be released on September 13th.

      What I love:

      I love how tragic looking this cover is.  With the girl curled up as if she's waiting for the waves to engulf her is just so heartbreaking and so lonely.  I like how her red dress is in contrast to the light colored backdrop which is the ocean.  It brings her out and it simply draws your attention to her.  The line, "Romeo and Juliet: the greatest love story ever told, is a lie," is just so intriguing and makes me want to read it now.

      Review: The Scorch Trials by James Dashner

      Reading Level: Young Adult
      Hardcover: 360 pages

      PublisherDelacorte Press Books for Young Readers; 1st edition (October 12th 2010)
      Language: English
      ISBN-10
      0385738757
      ISBN-13
      9780385738750
      Source: Purchased from Fully Booked
      First Sentence: "She spoke to him before the world fell apart."
      Favorite Line from the Book
      "No. I kind of accepted it, in a way. That saving you was worth losing what we might’ve had.
      Book Summary:  Solving the Maze was supposed to be the end. No more puzzles. No more variables. And no more running. Thomas was sure that escape meant he and the Gladers would get their lives back. But no one really knew what sort of life they were going back to.
      In the Maze, life was easy. They had food, and shelter, and safety . . . until Teresa triggered the end. In the world outside the Maze, however, the end was triggered long ago.
      Burned by sun flares and baked by a new, brutal climate, the earth is a wasteland. Government has disintegrated—and with it, order—and now Cranks, people covered in festering wounds and driven to murderous insanity by the infectious disease known as the Flare, roam the crumbling cities hunting for their next victim . . . and meal.
      The Gladers are far from finished with running. Instead of freedom, they find themselves faced with another trial. They must cross the Scorch, the most burned-out section of the world, and arrive at a safe haven in two weeks. And WICKED has made sure to adjust the variables and stack the odds against them.
      Thomas can only wonder—does he hold the secret of freedom somewhere in his mind? Or will he forever be at the mercy of WICKED?
      I have been looking for this sequel to The Maze Runner for a while now as it is always sold out in our local bookstores.  Good thing I was able to spot the single copy last week and finally got to read it.  I haven't been mistaken.  It is simply awesome!

      The book started just where The Maze Runner ended.  We can still see the usual gang - Thomas, Teresa, Newt, Minho, and Frypan.  Another character was also introduced - Aris.  He is the equivalent of Teresa in Group B.  Yes, there is another group and another maze which Wicked developed and ran simultaneously with Thomas' group - Group A.  I am going to stop here now as I might not be able to stop and continue retelling the story which I know will just piss you off.  This book is THAT amazing!  I can go on and on about it and might not stop.  Okay, stop now! ^_^

      Anyway, the story is still told in Thomas' point of view.  The book was even more descriptive than the first.  Its readers will get to understand what happened in their futuristic world and actually feel that intense heat, The Flare, by just reading through the book.  This second book was told in such a way that its readers will actually think about what would happen next.  It is gripping and it made me feel that I was on the edge a lot of times, trying to guess what their next move would be.

      The climax and the ending of this novel is not what I expected it to be.  Well, neither did The Maze Runner... Which is just so awesome!  It is so unpredictable that I actually re-read the last two chapters just to check if I missed anything that led to the ending.  If The Maze Runner is a cliffhanger, I don't know what to call this second book. It has so many twists and turns that you can never guess what comes next.  It is so intense that its readers will not and cannot take their eyes off the book until the very end.  I just couldn't wait for the third book, The Death Cure, to be released and finally get the answers to my questions and get my mind at ease.

      I have to commend James Dashner for being able to write such a climactic, intense novel which can make your head spin.  I'm so looking forward to the conclusion of this series.

      Review: The Espressologist by Kristina Springer

      Reading Level: Young Adult
      Hardcover: 184 pages

      Publisher: Farrar Straus Giroux; 1st edition (October 27th 2009)
      Language: English
      ISBN-10
      0374322287
      ISBN-13
      9780374322281
      Source: Purchased from Power Books
      Book Summary:  What’s your drink of choice? Is it a small pumpkin spice latte? Then you’re lots of fun and a bit sassy. Or a medium americano? You prefer simplicity in life. Or perhaps it’s a small decaf soy sugar-free hazelnut caffe latte? Some might call you a yuppie. Seventeen-year-old barista Jane Turner has this theory that you can tell a lot about a person by their regular coffee drink. She scribbles it all down in a notebook and calls it Espressology. So it’s not a totally crazy idea when Jane starts hooking up some of her friends based on their coffee orders. Like her best friend, Em, a medium hot chocolate, and Cam, a toffee nut latte. But when her boss, Derek, gets wind of Jane’s Espressology, he makes it an in-store holiday promotion, promising customers their perfect matches for the price of their favorite coffee. Things are going better than Derek could ever have hoped, so why is Jane so freaked out? Does it have anything to do with Em dating Cam? She’s the one who set them up! She should be happy for them, right?
      With overtones of Jane Austen’s Emma and brimming with humor and heart, this sweet, frothy debut will be savored by readers.
      This is just a very quick read to me given that it is just a little short of reaching 200 pages.  This book is what you definitely expect from a chick-lit novel - light, fun, and romance.  The idea behind this book is just plain genius.  Who would ever think of classifying people based on their preferred and favorite coffee mix and matching them with the other coffee addicts based on their drinks?  But of course, all of the greatness just plainly stopped there.  This novel, although a fun read, is also pretty much predictable. The characters are purely average and I couldn't even pinpoint anyone who stood out.  The book didn't intrigue me much as compared to the summary of the book.    What I do love about this novel though is how each coffee drink is greatly described and assigned to a certain type of person.  I feel that the author has really researched on this through observing people in a coffeehouse.

      I'll recommend this book to the younger people or to those readers who is looking for a quick, painless, easy read and who loves coffee.

      Waiting on Wednesday {11}

      Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases you are eagerly anticipating.

      Beautiful Days by Anna Godbersen will be released on September 20th 2011.  This is the second book of The Bright Young Things series.  I am excited to read what happens with Corderlia, Letty, and Astrid.  I loved how their stories were told in the first book and I can't wait to know what the future beholds for them as they embark on another chapter of their lives.

        The exciting sequel to Bright Young Things, by the bestselling author of The Luxe, promises romance, adventure, and intrigue in the final days of the Roaring Twenties.

        In this must-have sequel to Bright Young Things, Cordelia and Letty are small-town girls no longer. Letty is ready at last to chase her Broadway dreams. Cordelia thought she lost her true love, but a chance meeting will change her fortune—and her future. The unflappable flapper Astrid Donal has promised herself to Charlie Grey, Cordelia’s half-brother, but isn’t sure their love is true enough to survive. And a bitter rivalry will ensnare them all in a dangerous feud played out in the speakeasies of Manhattan and on the great lawns of Long Island. As these bright young things live out their beautiful days in the summer of 1929, they find romance and heartbreak, adventure and intrigue, new friends and unexpected rivals.

        Fans of The Luxe series, A Great and Terrible Beauty, Martin Scorsese’s hit HBO series Boardwalk Empire, and, of course, The Great Gatsby, will delight in the Jazz Age setting, a time when girls were enjoying newfound freedom and excitement could be found behind any door in Manhattan.
